Cradle Mountain day trip from Hobart: the complete 2026 guide
TLDR: If you have to do Cradle Mountain day trip in 1 day, DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF- BOOK A DAYTRIP You will thank us later.
Yes — Cradle Mountain is doable as a day trip from Hobart, but only if you plan it right. The drive is 300km and takes 4 to 4.5 hours each way, which gives you 4–5 hours inside the park. Leave by 6am at the latest. Most people who do it call it the best day of their entire trip to Tasmania.
What to expect on the drive from Hobart to Cradle Mountain
The route heads north through the Midlands — rolling farmland, old sandstone villages, wide open sky — then cuts west into the highlands. It's a good drive, not just dead time.
Deloraine is 2.5 hours from Hobart and the natural breakfast stop. It's a small arts town on the Meander River with good cafés and a relaxed pace. If you leave Hobart at 6am, you'll arrive around 8:30am — perfect timing for a proper breakfast before the final 1.5 hours into the park.
The highland section of the drive — from Deloraine west toward Cradle Mountain — is worth paying attention to. The landscape shifts from farmland to buttongrass moorland to dense rainforest. By the time you reach the park entrance, you already feel like you're somewhere remote.
How the park works: what you need to know before you arrive
A few things catch first-time visitors off guard at Cradle Mountain. Know these before you go:
You can't drive to Dove Lake. Private vehicles park at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre. A free shuttle bus runs from there into the park, stopping at Ronny Creek, Snake Hill, and Dove Lake. The shuttle is included in your national parks pass and runs every 10–15 minutes in peak season.
A national parks pass is required. Day passes are available at the gate (around $22 per adult). If you're also visiting Freycinet or any other Tasmanian national park on the same trip, buy the 2-month holiday pass (~$75 per adult) — it covers everything and pays for itself quickly.
Arrive early. The shuttle queue builds from around 9:30am on busy summer days. Getting to the visitor centre by 9am means you're on the first shuttle and have the walks largely to yourself for the first hour.
Which Cradle Mountain walk should you do on a day trip?
You'll realistically have 4–5 hours in the park. Here's how to choose:
Dove Lake Circuit — best for most visitors
- Distance: 6km loop
- Time: 2–3 hours
- Grade: Moderate
- Elevation gain: ~150m
The Dove Lake Circuit is the walk that defines Cradle Mountain. It circles the entire glacial lake with the jagged dolerite peaks of Cradle Mountain reflected in the water for most of the route. The boardwalk sections near the shore are immaculate. The rest of the track is rocky in places but never technical. We take visitors on this walk regularly — most people with reasonable fitness complete it comfortably and finish wanting more.
Marion's Lookout — for walkers who want altitude
- Distance: 6.9km return from Ronny Creek
- Time: 3–4 hours
- Grade: Moderate to hard
- Elevation gain: ~450m
Marion's Lookout is a steeper, more exposed climb that delivers wide-open views across Dove Lake and the Tasmanian wilderness plateau. The final section involves some boulder scrambling. It's harder than the circuit but the views are a different order of magnitude. Choose this if you have solid fitness and good footwear.
Enchanted Walk — for families or a gentle start
- Distance: 1.6km loop
- Time: 20–30 minutes
- Grade: Easy (flat boardwalk)
A flat loop through ancient pencil pines and pandani palms just inside the park. Good for families with young children, or as a warm-up before the Dove Lake Circuit. The forest is atmospheric — dense, dark green, and unlike anything else in Australia.
Wildlife at Cradle Mountain: what you'll actually see
We've done this trip hundreds of times. Here's what visitors reliably encounter:
Wombats are essentially guaranteed at Ronny Creek and the Dove Lake foreshore. They graze in the open, completely unbothered by people, and getting within a few metres of one going about its day is a memorable experience. Don't try to pat them — they're wild animals and their bite is serious.
Bennett's wallabies are common throughout the park. Echidnas regularly turn up on the walking tracks. Tasmanian devils are nocturnal and rarely seen during daylight, but the park has a healthy population.
For birds: yellow wattlebirds, green rosellas, and black currawongs are everywhere. The currawongs in particular are bold — keep your snacks in your pack.

Self-drive vs guided tour from Hobart
Self-drive gives you flexibility on timing and the freedom to stop wherever you want on the drive. The Midlands Highway is a good road and the highland scenery is worth taking slowly.
The honest reality: after 9 hours of driving plus 3–4 hours of walking, you arrive back in Hobart spent. That's not a problem if you have a rest day the next day. If you have other plans, it's worth factoring in.
A guided day tour from Hobart handles the driving, park entry, shuttle logistics, and local knowledge — where the wombats are most reliable, which section of the circuit has the best light at what time of day, what the forecast actually means for your walk. You step off the vehicle at Dove Lake and everything has been sorted.
This small-group Cradle Mountain day tour from Hobart departs at 6am, includes return transport, national parks entry, and a local guide who has done this walk in every season and condition. It's the reason most of our guests say this was the day they didn't expect to love as much as they did.
